The best eSIM for Mauritania
A country in Northwest Africa. Compare stored plan prices, data allowances and validity, plus practical things to know before you fly. Confirm current offers with the provider.
The lowest-total-price plan from the first provider in our catalog-average ranking. Larger bundles can have a lower $/GB. Match the listed data allowance and validity to your trip; a seven-day plan does not cover two weeks.

Saily: 1 historical entries excluded from current comparisons
These historical variants cannot be matched reliably to current merchant products. We compare separately captured offers instead. This does not establish that the old plans were discontinued or that a current offer descends from any particular old entry.

Stored prices may have changed. Google Fi is excluded from the value ranking because it is a full phone plan rather than a travel data plan.
What if it was just $5.00 a GB, everywhere?
We are considering a BetterSIM eSIM at one flat rate worldwide. No tiers, no bundles, no per-country price shopping, no volume discounts you never reach. The same $5.00 in Mauritania as in Fiji or Kenya.
Straight answer: this would not be the cheapest option. The plans listed on this page are often less per GB, especially in Europe and Asia. It would be the simplest. Savings against Google Fi depend on usage, Bill Protection and speed needs.
Network coverage, region by region
Mauritel (Maroc Telecom subsidiary), Mattel and Chinguitel all run 3G with patches of 4G across central Nouakchott, the Marché Capitale and the El Mina fishing-port district. Mauritel has the wider 3G/4G national footprint.
Nouadhibou, the country's industrial hub at the Western Sahara border, has functional 3G/4G in town. The famous iron-ore train (one of the world's longest trains, running 700+ km from Zouérat to Nouadhibou) is mostly offline; the start and end stations have signal.
The Banc d'Arguin National Park (UNESCO, one of the world's most important sites for migratory birds) has very basic signal at the Iwik fishing village. The deeper park, the Imraguen fishing-tribe villages and the boat trips through the bird colonies are reliably offline.
Atar (the regional capital) has basic Mauritel signal. The ancient caravan cities of Chinguetti and Ouadane (both UNESCO sites with medieval libraries) have minimal coverage at the centres; the desert routes between them and the longer 4x4 dune crossings are offline.
The vast Sahara interior - the salt flats at Sebkhet Ndrhamcha, the dune fields of Erg Akchâr and the Adrar plateau approaches - has effectively no cellular signal. Multi-day desert expeditions require satellite communication.
Rosso, the busy ferry-crossing town with Senegal, has functional Mauritel and Mattel signal. The drive along the Senegal River valley has signal at the larger towns; the deeper Sahelian villages thin briefly.
City-by-city connectivity in Mauritania
Nouakchott
- Arriving
- Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International (NKC) is close to the capital; transfers are by taxi. The airport has 3G/4G from Mauritel, Mattel and Chinguitel. Nouakchott is the desert capital on the Atlantic, one of only two cities with reliable data. Download everything offline before any travel into the Saharan interior.
- On the subway and rail
- Nouakchott moves by shared taxis and minibuses; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the centre, the Marché Capitale and the El Mina fishing port. The vast Saharan interior beyond the capital is largely offline.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels and the larger restaurants provide WiFi, generally the most reliable option. NKC airport has basic WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the capital.
- Coverage in the city
- Mauritel (a Maroc Telecom subsidiary), Mattel and Chinguitel all run 3G with patches of 4G across central Nouakchott, the Marché Capitale and El Mina, with Mauritel the wider. Nouadhibou has functional service; the Adrar oasis towns, the iron-ore train route and the deep Sahara are reliably offline.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Mauritel, Mattel and Chinguitel sell SIMs at NKC and in Nouakchott, with Mauritel the wider. Very few international eSIM providers cover Mauritania, so a local Mauritel SIM is the practical option; satellite communication is needed for desert crossings.
Local Network Insights
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Mauritania to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Connectivity Overview
Mauritania has basic mobile connectivity in its main urban areas. Mauritel (Maroc Telecom) and Chinguitel provide 3G/4G in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Coverage outside these two cities is extremely limited, particularly in the vast Saharan interior that makes up most of the country.
The Iron Ore Railway route and Adrar region (Chinguetti, Ouadane) have very basic coverage in oasis towns but nothing in between. The Atlantic coast fishing villages have intermittent coverage. Mauritania is a challenging destination for connected travelers, and very few eSIM providers include it. Satellite communication may be necessary for desert crossings.
Practical Data Tips
- Very few eSIM providers cover Mauritania
- Nouakchott and Nouadhibou are the only cities with reliable data
- No coverage in the Saharan interior between oasis towns
- Download everything offline before any desert travel
- Mauritel (Maroc Telecom) has the wider network

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Mauritania eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Choose your travel data line.
On iPhone, select your travel eSIM in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. Follow your provider's roaming and activation instructions. Choosing a data line does not by itself prevent charges on your home line.
- 4
Decide whether to keep your home line on.
You do not need to disable iMessage simply because you use a travel eSIM. Apple’s travel eSIM guidance says iMessage and FaceTime can continue using your home line while traveling. If you keep both lines active for home-number calls or SMS, your carrier may charge roaming fees. Check your carrier’s terms before leaving your home line on.
- 5
Download offline maps for Mauritania.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.

How we built this page
Country plan prices come from stored supplier snapshots. The catalog contains different data amounts and validity periods. Provider ordering uses the unweighted average $/GB of fixed plans, or the PAYG rate; unlimited plans are excluded from that average. Check a plan’s data, validity and total price against your trip before buying.
