- Arriving
- The north's own airport is Ercan (ECN), reached by flights via Turkey, about 30 km from Kyrenia; many visitors instead fly into Larnaca in the south and cross the Green Line. Transfers are by taxi or dolmuş shared minibus. The carriers are Turkish-operated, so an EU or south-Cyprus plan will not work here. Download offline maps before crossing.
- On the subway and rail
- Kyrenia moves by dolmuş shared minibuses and taxis; there is no rail. The old harbour, the castle and the town centre are walkable. Coverage holds across the town and the main coastal road on the Turkish networks; the Bellapais and St Hilarion approaches in the hills thin briefly.
- Free public WiFi
- Cafes around the picturesque old harbour, the hotels and the castle visitor area provide WiFi. Connectivity is easy in town, a useful supplement given that you will likely need a separate Turkey-covering plan for cellular data here.
- Coverage in the city
- Turkcell and Telsim, both using Turkish network infrastructure, run 4G across Kyrenia, the old harbour, Kyrenia Castle, Bellapais Abbey and the road up to St Hilarion Castle. EU roaming does not apply north of the Green Line, so a Republic of Cyprus or EU plan will stop working here.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Turkcell and Telsim sell SIMs in Kyrenia, and most Turkey-focused eSIM plans work here since the networks are Turkish-operated. Critically, your EU or southern Cyprus plan will not, so arrange Turkey or Northern Cyprus coverage before or right after crossing the Green Line.
Famagusta (Gazimağusa)
- Arriving
- Ercan (ECN) is about 50 km away, with flights via Turkey, or arrive through the south and cross the Green Line. Transfers are by dolmuş or taxi. As across the north, the networks are Turkish, so an EU or south-Cyprus eSIM will not function. Have a Turkey-covering plan ready and download offline maps before crossing.
- On the subway and rail
- Famagusta moves by dolmuş minibuses and taxis; the walled old city, the university district and the seafront are walkable. There is no rail. Coverage holds across the walled city and the town on the Turkish networks; the fenced Varosha quarter and the rural approaches are patchier.
- Free public WiFi
- Cafes in the walled city, the hotels and the Eastern Mediterranean University campus (a large student presence) provide WiFi. Connectivity is easy in town, which helps given the need for a separate Turkey-covering data plan in the north.
- Coverage in the city
- Turkcell and Telsim run 4G across the walled old city, the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (the former cathedral), Othello Castle and the university district. The partially reopened Varosha (Maraş) fenced zone and the nearby Salamis ruins are covered at the main points. EU roaming does not apply here.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Turkcell and Telsim sell SIMs in Famagusta, and Turkey-focused eSIM plans generally work given the Turkish network infrastructure. An EU or Republic of Cyprus plan will not, so secure Turkey or Northern Cyprus coverage if your trip crosses the Green Line.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Northern Cyprus to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Northern Cyprus (the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) operates on a completely separate telecommunications infrastructure from the Republic of Cyprus to the south. Turkcell and Telsim are the main carriers, both using Turkish network infrastructure to provide coverage across the territory. 4G is available in major towns like North Nicosia (Lefkosa), Famagusta (Gazimagusa), and Kyrenia (Girne), with 3G filling in smaller villages and coastal areas.
Critically, Northern Cyprus is not recognized as an EU member state, and EU roaming regulations do not apply here. If you cross the Green Line from the south, your EU eSIM plan will stop working and you will need a separate plan with Turkey or Northern Cyprus coverage. Many Turkey-focused eSIM plans will work in Northern Cyprus, as the networks are Turkish-operated. Data costs are moderate, closer to Turkish pricing than EU pricing.
