Google Fi is fundamentally different from every other provider on this list. It is not a travel eSIM - it is a full-service US mobile carrier that happens to include excellent international roaming. For eligible US subscribers, it can provide roaming on an existing monthly phone plan.
Flexible and Unlimited Premium cover wider international travel; Unlimited Standard includes Canada and Mexico, while Unlimited Essentials is US-only. Check destination-specific data, call and text availability and charges before travel. The trade-off is the US residency requirement and the higher baseline cost compared to data-only travel eSIMs.
But for American travelers who are tired of juggling a primary phone plan plus a travel eSIM, Google Fi eliminates that complexity entirely.
Pricing and Plans
Flexible data-only usage examples for an existing eligible subscriber: one line, one billing cycle, no other data use, and no optional full-speed purchase. These are not standalone travel packages; 30 days is an illustration, not purchased validity. Ordinary data costs $10/GB up to $60 after 6GB.
The required $20/month service base, taxes, fees and other charges are separate ($80 combined base and ordinary data at the cap, before extras). Group Bill Protection thresholds differ. Domestic and overseas data share the cycle: prior usage can reduce the incremental data charge; crossing billing cycles changes the total.
After 15GB per member in a billing cycle, speeds slow to 256kbps. Restoring full speed is optional and costs an additional $10/GB for the rest of that cycle; it is not included in the $60 ordinary-data cap. Requires US residency, initial US activation, primarily US use and an active voice subscription in good standing.
Activate and use service, including new SIMs and devices, in the US for at least one day before travel. Extended roaming can lead to international-data suspension; no 90-day allowance is guaranteed. Check destination coverage with Fi; the existing coverage list was not reverified by this shared pricing review.

Voice, SMS, and International Communication
This is Google Fi's defining advantage over every data-only eSIM provider. You get unlimited calls and texts within the US, international texting and voice calling where your plan supports them. Your US number can remain available in covered destinations; check plan-specific availability and call rates rather than assuming worldwide service is included.
For business travelers, this is invaluable. You do not need to share a temporary number, set up call forwarding, or rely on Wi-Fi calling apps. Restaurants, hotels, and local contacts can reach you on the same number your colleagues use.
No data-only eSIM provider can replicate this, and it is the primary reason someone would choose Google Fi despite the higher cost.
Network and Coverage
In the US, Google Fi runs on T-Mobile's network with automatic switching between carriers for optimal coverage. Flexible and Unlimited Premium support roaming in covered destinations through local carrier partnerships. Unlimited Standard is limited to Canada and Mexico outside the US, and Unlimited Essentials does not work outside the US.
Check your plan, destination, device and settings before relying on calls, texts or data abroad. International hotspot is supported on iPhone as well as Android on Flexible, Unlimited Plus, and Unlimited Premium. On iPhone, Fi Help documents Personal Hotspot APN setup (h2g2-t); the APN may need to be re-entered after a reboot, and reliability can vary by market.
The 4G LTE and 5G coverage internationally depends on the local carrier partner, but in most popular destinations the connection quality is reliable for standard travel use.
Security and Google Integration
Google Fi includes a built-in VPN that encrypts your traffic on all networks, including public Wi-Fi. For travelers connecting to hotel, airport, and cafe Wi-Fi around the world, this is a practical security benefit that normally requires a separate subscription from a provider like NordVPN or ExpressVPN. Spam call protection is also built in, filtering out robocalls and scam attempts.
For users already in the Google ecosystem - Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos - Fi integrates naturally. Account management is through Google's standard interface, and the Fi app provides usage monitoring and plan management. The integration extends to Google Pixel phones, which are designed to work optimally with Fi, though the service works on any eSIM-compatible device.
The US Residency Requirement
The biggest limitation of Google Fi is also the most absolute: you must be a US resident to sign up. You need a US shipping address, a US-issued payment method, and the service must be primarily used within the United States. Google requires activation and use in the US for at least one day before travel.
Extended overseas use can trigger a warning and subsequent international-data suspension; there is no guaranteed 90-day travel allowance. Follow the timing and return-to-US conditions in your warning and current Fi policy. This makes Google Fi excellent for US residents who travel frequently but always return home, and unsuitable for expats, long-term nomads, or anyone without US residency.
If you spend more time abroad than at home, a dedicated travel eSIM provider with no residency requirements is the better option. Google Fi is a travel perk attached to a US phone plan, not a standalone travel product.

Should you use Google Fi? Depends on your trip.
| Trip shape | Good fit? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short city break (3 to 5 days, light data) | Maybe | Useful if you already have an eligible Fi subscription with destination coverage; compare its monthly service and usage costs before switching for one short trip. |
| Single country, 2 weeks (maps, messaging, occasional photos) | Maybe | Check your existing Fi plan’s destination coverage and data allowance. Fi is monthly US phone service, not a 14-day country bundle; US activation and use requirements apply. |
| Multi-country trip (Europe rail, Southeast Asia loop) | Maybe | Flexible or Unlimited Premium may cover your itinerary. Verify every destination; Standard covers Canada and Mexico outside the US, and Essentials is US-only. |
| 30+ day digital nomad stay | No | Fi requires primary US use. Extended overseas use can trigger warnings and international-data suspension; it is not a long-term overseas service. |
| Family of four sharing data | Maybe | Check the eligible subscription’s hotspot allowance, device support and destination coverage; a monthly phone plan is not a shared travel-data bundle. |
| Business traveler taking video calls daily | Maybe | Existing eligible subscribers should check international high-speed allowances and hotspot terms, and arrange a backup for important calls. |
| Cruise traveler (need data at sea + in port) | No | Do not assume Fi international roaming includes maritime service. Check covered port destinations and arrange separate at-sea connectivity. |
| Frequent traveler who does not want to think about top-ups | Maybe | An existing eligible monthly subscription can simplify short trips, subject to destination coverage, charges and primary US-use requirements. |

Google Fi can suit eligible US residents with an existing Fi subscription traveling to supported destinations on a qualifying plan. How we built this page
This review combines a stored provider profile with country plan snapshots. Profile examples and country catalogs can cover different products and dates. Ratings have their own source dates. Check current pricing, coverage and terms with the provider before buying.
A different signal from service reviews. A great eSIM can have a clunky app, and vice versa.
