1. The two-plan rule for Caribbean cruises
In port and at sea are different products. Mixing them up is how travelers burn a maritime bucket on Cozumel photo dumps — or try Nomad past 12 nautical miles.
Default Caribbean stack
- Port eSIM(s) sized for the countries you actually step into — often one Mexico plan + one Jamaica or Bahamas plan, or a small plan per short stop.
- Sea coverage — GigSky 5 GB / 30 days at $69.99–$99.99 for a typical messaging-and-maps week, or ship WiFi if you need unlimited streaming evenings.
GigSky's cruise plans also include land coverage on the route, so a GigSky-only week is operationally simpler. It is rarely the cheapest way to burn heavy data in Cozumel or Nassau — the lowest-$/GB plans of 30 days or less on the Mexico, Jamaica and Bahamas pages work out to $1.00–$2.45/GB, while GigSky's 5 GB maritime plan is about $14.00–$20.00/GB. Use GigSky for sea essentials; dump photo uploads and maps onto a land plan in port when the math favors it.
Across the four port countries in the table below, Nomad has the lowest average price per GB of the providers that sell in all four ($5.95/GB). The cruise hub ranks providers over twelve cruise-port countries, most of them in Europe, where Virgin Connect leads ($2.67/GB); a Caribbean week can rank differently. No land eSIM works at sea. That is not a knock — it is the product boundary.
2. Sample 7-day math: Eastern vs Western Caribbean
Assumptions for both samples: one unlocked eSIM phone, messaging + maps + some social in port, light WhatsApp/email on sea days. Not Netflix every night.
Western Caribbean (e.g. Cozumel / Costa Maya + Jamaica and/or Belize)
Typical shape: 3–4 sea days, 3–4 port half-days. Heavy shore time often lands in Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya) and Jamaica (Falmouth / Montego Bay) or Belize City.
Eastern Caribbean (e.g. Nassau + Eastern island stops)
Eastern itineraries lean on Bahamas (Nassau / Paradise Island) plus other islands. Use the Bahamas floor below; price each extra island on its destination page or via the trip matcher — there is no single Caribbean regional plan that is cheapest for every Eastern stop.

Buy a plan labeled for cruise / maritime (e.g. Cruise + Americas/Caribbean in the GigSky app). Standard land GigSky plans do not include at-sea coverage. App checkout prices can move — check the cruise-ship table and confirm in-app before purchase.
3. Port table: cheapest land eSIM + destination links

How to use the table on a real booking
- Price only the countries you step into. A Western sailing that skips Belize does not need a Belize plan.
- For a 6–8 hour stop, prefer the port's cheapest small plan (from $2.99 on these four pages) over a 20 GB plan you will not finish — unless that same plan also covers another stop on a multi-country plan you already hold.
- Install and test on Wi-Fi before boarding. Port time is too short for QR troubleshooting at the pier.
On the Bahamas page, Virgin Connect's 20 GB / 30-day plan is $73.00 ($3.65/GB), above Nomad's $2.45/GB, the lowest there on a plan of 30 days or less. On the Jamaica page, Virgin Connect's 20 GB / 30-day plan is $73.00 ($3.65/GB), above Nomad's $2.25/GB, the lowest there on a plan of 30 days or less. A provider's average across many cruise ports and its price on a single island are different questions; check each destination page for the stops you actually make.
4. When a land plan wins in port vs GigSky-only
Trip-shape calls, not brand loyalty. Land winners stay in port; maritime stays at sea.
Honest non-wins
- Nomad / Virgin Connect / GoMoWorld never replace GigSky or ship WiFi once you are offshore.
- GigSky-only is a poor choice if your plan is “backup the whole camera roll in Cozumel on cellular.” Buy land data for that.
- A 20 GB plan for a single three-hour tender stop is usually overbuy — use the port's cheapest small plan, or stay on GigSky land if you already have cruise+land.
5. Dead zones and tenders (short)
Full detail lives on the GigSky cruise guide. Caribbean-specific reminders only:
- 60–90 minutes of no useful signal on departure and approach — too far for land towers, too close for maritime handoff. Do not depend on data for last-minute excursion tickets while the ship is still in the channel.
- Tender ports / anchorages (Cabo San Lucas on some Mexican Riviera sailings; Grand Cayman on many Eastern/Western itineraries) can sit in the dead zone until the tender nears shore. Land eSIMs only help after you are in town.
- Belize interior / Caracol and jungle roads are often offline even with a working Digi/Smart eSIM — download maps; see the Belize destination notes.
- Disable cloud photo backup and App Store cellular updates before sea days so a 5 GB maritime bucket survives the week.

Unlimited plans are left out because they have no size to compare. Advertised base prices; tax and checkout unverified.
